University Files: Fashion student problems

16 March 2016

As you may be aware I am coming to the end of a very gruelling last year of my fashion design course. Don't get me wrong I've learnt many lessons. Over the three years and I have always loved reading
fashionuniproblems.tumblr.com posts which has inspired me to write a few of my own. Enjoy.

When you see free fabric ...

When someone is on your sewing machine...

When you are in mid-sew and the power goes off ...

When the pattern cutter has left but you have so many questions to ask them but you don't understand the universe anymore...

Solution to most of your problems ...

Buying calico like...

When someone asks you how it is going...

When your fashion design teacher doesn't like your ideas...

After you have a good tutorial ...

Why Kylie Jenner's braids are not a 'hair trend'

12 March 2016

One day I was scrolling through my Instagram (as you do when you are procrastinating). I happened to stumble across Kylie Jenner's picture of her wearing braids. That wasn't the unusual bit. The unusual bit was when hair blogs, magazines, youtubers began to copy this look and label it a 'hair trend'. This was the point I became frustrated because growing up in an African household my mum would braid my hair in cornrows and for as long as I can remember (or two big fat doo doo plaits). This was a normal thing.
So why is it that a Kardashian braiding their hair in the same way only now seen as a trend because it is on a Caucasian person? I feel very strongly that this is cultural appropriation. The fact that the exact same hair style can not be treated in the same light on different people is disgraceful in my eyes. Don't get me wrong hair trends are a good thing to allow people to experiment with their style. However, I feel as though this trend has been taken out of context for certain individuals.

Muted Florals

3 March 2016

The transition to Spring is upon us. I have had a number of compliments on this skirt in particular. The length is so ideal but the print is what steals the show. Now, a floral print isn’t rocket science for spring, however with these muted tones and the hint of colour makes the skirt come alive.
I do love a good black crop top and this one is perfect for the cooler weather, I also am obsessed with how comfortable this particular one is.
I am slowly but surely becoming very passionate about …shoes. These loafers from Dune are super comfortable and give the whole outfit a smarter feel.
